The development and availability of prescription medicines have increased the treatment of pain, anxiety, and mental disorders.  In a 2004 report given by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,

“ the number of Americans reporting abuse of prescription medications was higher than the combined total of those reporting abuse of cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin. More than 14.5 million persons reported having used prescription medications non medically within the past year. Of this 14.5 million, more than 2 million were between ages 12 and 17.”

“Older adults are particularly vulnerable to misuse and abuse of prescription medications…data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicate that non medical use of prescription medications was the second most common form of substance abuse among adults older than 55.”

Here are some red flags for abuse:

Lost prescriptions-(no one really ever loses their prescriptions).

There are multiple physicians writing scripts for patient.

Multiple and frequent trips to the emergency room for prescriptions.
