According to the National Institute on Drug Addiction, drug abuse costs Americans, annually, over a trillion dollars in lost productivity which includes health and crime related costs. This number is staggering to me but not surprising given the fact that drug use is seemingly acceptable behavior among today’s generation. The real fact is that drug abuse is killing our country. The epidemic of crystal meth in rural America, crack and heroin use in urban America and the easy accessability to perscription medication, denial that help is needed is no longer acceptable. Families are disintegrating, communities are crippled and people are dying because of the disease of addiction. There are so many factors that play into why someone becomes addicted to drugs and alcohol; biological, environmental and the stages of development are all influences.
However, drug addiction is preventable through education and tools used in addiction treatment facilites. Involvement of family, friends and community, along with education on the risks of drug abuse, we can help stop addiction and win our families and communities back. If you or someone you know is suffering from addiction there is help. Please do not hesitate to call. Together we can win this fight.
