Drug Traffickers Arrested in Savannah, Georgia

In Savannah, Georgia, the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force handed down indictments on 32 people with a conspiracy to distribute marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy in Georgia and California.  Following a six-month investigation, drug proceeds, guns, vehicles and drugs, as well as, 200 pound bales of marijuana which was to be distributed in Savannah were seized.

U.S. Attorney Edward J.Tarver states, “The United States Attorney’s Office and its state and federal partners will continue its efforts to shut down those large operations responsible for supplying street level drug traffickers.”

Dangers of K2, Illegal or Not

Named after K2 the mountain,  which is the second highest summit in the world, their is a danger  to society K2-synthetic marijuana.  This herbal incense is now being catorized an illegal substance in 8 states.  Illegal or not, K2 is extremely dangerous.  The ingredients listed on the package are herbs, what is not listed is the synthetic compounds JWH-018 and JWH-073 wherein lies the danger. 

JWH-018 and JWH-073 compounds give K2 its mind altering affects and are the synthetic cannabinoids which mimics the effects of marijuana.  Users of marijuana like the high that  K2 gives  without the danger of prosecution from drug use.  Although using K2 is dangerous, many marijuana users who have to deal with probation or parole will take the chance in using K2 because it does not show positive for drug use in urine testing.

The urgency to make K2 illegal in all states

Emergency rooms all over the country are seeing a rise in visits from teens suffering from side effects of the synthetic derivitive of marijuana known as K2 or spice.  K2 marketed as incense, is being sold in gas stations, head shops and online where teens are able to just walk in and make a purchase.  Legislators from several states are making a push to make k2 illegal and added to the contolled substance list of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Unfortunately, not so with the case of a teenage boy in Iowa who had just graduated high school a week before smoking K2.  Police reported that the boy started freaking out and hallucinating after smoking the synthetic substance; went home, got a rifle and shot himself.  Although this might be an isolate account, what is not so isolated is the fact poison control centers throughout the United States are receiving more and more calls from people who have smoked K2.

Playing Russian Roulette With K2

Puerto Rican Drug Bust

CNN reports,  according to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Caribbean Division along with the Justice Department, 158 arrests were made in conjuction with the largest drug and illegal weapons bust in Puerto Rican history.  500 agents and local officals worked to secure the apprehension of drug ring leaders, runners, suppliers and sellers.  This operation will rid the west coast in the small Caribbean Island of the most hard core and major drug traffickers in Puerto Rico. 

The defendants were charged with the attempt to distribute and sell marijuana, crack, cocaine, heroin, as well as, the possession of firearms.  If convicted the defendants could spend up to life in prison and pay fines up to $4 million dollars.  Most of the arrest were made near public housing complexes located near schools and sports facilites.  The area of the arrests is where a major sporting event would be taking place where as many as 300,000 spectators would be in attendance.

Heroin Addiction in Tennessee

In a recent report done by News Channel 9 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a heroin drug ring was dismantled and saved from being sold on the streets and injected into the arms of heroin drug addicts.  This latest drug bust leads many to ask the question-Is there a heroin problem in Chattanooga?  Because heroin is inexpensive, one can purchase heroin for $20 to $60 depending on the amount used, makes the opiate one of the most commonly used drugs.  Heroin can be snorted or smoked, however, injecting the drug is what most addicts prefer.

Seized Illegal Narcotics

According to CNN.com, California authorities siezed $45 million dollars worth of illegal drugs found in a tractor trailer.  The San Bernardino sheriffs office reports that during the investigation of the traffic violation, they noticed a “overwhelming odor”  coming from the pallets in the back of the truck.  Upon futher investigation the sheriffs officials discovered ”about 20 tons of narcotics stashed in pallets in the back of the truck, including about 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine and 67 pounds of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said in a statement,”  which resulted in was one of the largest narcotics bust in the counties history.

Opiate Addiction
