JWH-018 and JWH-073 compounds give K2 its mind altering affects and are the synthetic cannabinoids which mimics the effects of marijuana.  Users of marijuana like the high that  K2 gives  without the danger of prosecution from drug use.  Although using K2 is dangerous, many marijuana users who have to deal with probation or parole will take the chance in using K2 because it does not show positive for drug use in urine testing.

Playing Russian Roulette With K2

K2, also know as Spice, is spreading like wildfire throughout the United States and sending many of its users to hospital emergency rooms.  Recently, CBS news reported that 6 states have put into law the illegal distribution and use of K2-synthetic marijuana;  Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Missouri. Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and New York are now considering bans.

K2 is very easy to get.  One can order K2 off the internet and through magazines.  K2 seems harmful enough because it is marketed as incense or bath salts  and packaged in brightly colored bags.  But those who are using the synthetic drug are playing russian roulette with their lives.  Dr. Gaylor Lopez is the director of the Georgia Poison Control Center in Atlanta, states, “we started seeing a mushrooming of calls”, only 12 calls came into the Poison Control Center in 2009, the center has already received over 500 calls nationwide, which is “incredibly dangerous” Lopez says. 

K2 is 15 times more potent that marijuana and can have disturbing side effects like seizures and tremor activity.  One user states that he had used the drug more than 50 times until he wound up in the hospital and then found himself going to addiction treatment in New York.  Everytime one uses K2 they are gambling with their lives.  The Drug Enforcement Administration in Washington, D.C., is looking into whether they should put K2-spice should be a controlled substance and make illegal in all 50 states.

Illegal Substitute

Sonny Perdue, Governor of Georgia, signed into law banning the marijuana substitute, K2.  This new law bans the use and distribution of synthethic marijuana, in the state of Georgia.  The law, H.B. 1309, places K2 on the schedule I controlled substance list along with Heroin and above Coaine, Ritalin and Opium which are schedule II substances. Created in the 1990s by a Clemson University organic chemist John W. Huffman, K2 mimicked the effects of cannabis on the brain.

“Side effects of the drug include rapid heart rate, very high blood pressure, hallucinations, seizures, vomiting and paranoia. K2 attacks cardiovascular and central nervous systems. It is used mostly by young people who are hoping for a marijuana-like high.”

Governor Perdue states that adding it to the schedule I list will help protect the health and safety of all Georgian’s.  Atlanta reported that at least 12 cases of K2 hospitalizations for poisioning with serious health problems from the marijuana substitute.  Several other states have followed suit by passing laws banning the use and distribution of K2, according to USA Today.  Those states are Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Missouri.

Marijuana Abuse
