Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in America.  The fight to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes has and will continue to be an issue in many state senates.  In April of 2010, the Maryland Senate voted for the legalization of medical marijuana.  For many the pros for the decriminalization of marijuana makes sense in that the cost for marijuana laws are expensive and alcohol and cigarettes, according to medical research, is much more harmful and addictive.  Marijuana use is harmful to the body is many ways.  Smoking marijuana damages brain cells, destroys lung tissue, causes increased appetite, and  paranoia among its users. 

“Carcinogenic, or cancercausing, materials found in tobacco also are in marijuana, and smoking one marijuana cigarette can deposit three to four times as much tar in the respiratory tract as a single filtered tobacco cigarette, according to research from Dr. Donald Tashkin, a pulmonologist at the University of California at Los Angeles who has studied marijuana effects for 30 years.”

“As with tobacco cigarettes, smoking marijuana habitually has been shown to reduce respiratory function and harm the lining of the lungs, according to the institute report. Smoking marijuana regularly increases the risk of bronchitis and respiratory infection.”

The debate about the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes will continue to be a hot topic among advocates for and against its use.  There is one condition that will not be changed and that is any drug that does harm to the body and affects one to the point that the drug addiction is destroying ones life addiction treatment then becomes a  necessity.
